Get yourself safe
If the car is drivable and it is safe, ease off the road, onto the shoulder or a side street. People first, the car second.
Warn other traffic
Hazard lights on. If you carry a warning triangle, place it well back. On a freeway, stay behind the barrier, not beside the car.
